How the counts are calculated
Words are counted by splitting on whitespace, so hyphenated-words count as one and contractions like "don't" count as one. Sentences are counted by periods, question marks, and exclamation points followed by a space or line end — informal or unusual punctuation can throw this off slightly. Reading time is based on an average adult silent reading speed of about 200 words per minute.
Abbreviations like "Dr." or "e.g." contain periods that this tool can't reliably distinguish from real sentence endings, so heavily abbreviated text may show a slightly inflated sentence count.
